ATTORNEY DANIEL MEACHUM BECOMES NEWEST MEMBER OF NCCU FOUNDATION BOARD


THE NCCU FOUNDATION, INC. WELCOMES TWO NEW MEMBERS
TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the appointment of two new directors, Mary D. Jacobs, Ed.D., and Daniel R. Meachum, Esquire. Jacobs and Meachum will join the board at its next meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2009.

“These two individuals offer an array of professional experiences that will strengthen the capacity of the board,” said LaTanya Afolayan, executive director of the NCCU Foundation. “The University and the Foundation will certainly benefit from their expertise and energy.”

Jacobs is a former Durham County Commissioner and also a former member of the Durham City Council. She is currently a real estate broker in Durham and has served on several community non-profit boards including the Durham Visitors and Convention Bureau, the YMCA, and most recently the United Negro College Fund. Jacobs received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bennett College, a master’s degree from North Carolina Central University and a doctorate in adult and community college education from North Carolina State University.

Meachum is an attorney in Atlanta, Ga., with more than 20 years of experience in complex litigation, premises liability, products liability, and entertainment and sports law. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science from North Carolina Central University and completed law school at Howard University. Meachum has been admitted to the bar in the Georgia Superior Court, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. His community affiliations include the West Philadelphia YMCA Board of Managers, where he served as chairman. Meachum’s other memberships include the Board of Directors of the West Philadelphia Mental Health Consortium; 100 Black Men of Atlanta; Phi Alpha Delta Legal Fraternity; and the Georgia Trial Attorneys Section, Georgia Entertainment and Sports Law Section.

The North Carolina Central University Foundation exists to foster and promote the growth of higher education in North Carolina and specifically at North Carolina Central University. The foundation was created under the leadership of Chancellor Albert N. Whiting in response to an increasing need for private support, and incorporated in June of 1972 by the Secretary of State.

Members of the NCCU Foundation Board of Directors serve as ambassadors for NCCU and raise money from private sources for scholarships, endowed professorships, and a variety of purposes in support of higher education. According to Chairwoman Frankie Perry, “The members of the Board of Directors of the NCCU Foundation recognize that private funds have become more essential now more than ever to nurture the excellence that characterizes this university. We welcome the exceptional talent of Dr. Jacobs and Attorney Meachum.”
